In this study, we introduced "Nautical Chart Adequacy Evaluation Procedure" (Klem et la.2016)(hereinafter referred to as the NCAE procedure) and the results of a trial of the NACE procedure in the waters around Japan.
The validity of the chart (Chart Adequacy) refers to the effectiveness of the information necessary for the safety of navigation, including the depth of water and seafloor topography described in the chart. Proper evaluation of the validity of the chart is one of the important aspects of determining the priority of hydrographic survey.

The NCAE procedure is a method which performs raster operation using four elements of the water depth change, vessel traffic, reference depth and quality information of depth described in the chart to quantify the chart adequacy by using ArcGIS.

In order to perform the NCAE procedure in the waters around Japan, it was necessary to make some changes because the data set in Japan was different. In addition, it was suggested that the NCAE procedure is effective by making improvements in the waters around Japan.
