In the actual context of constant increase in human population and climate warming, the land use is more than ever important for agriculture with issues like food production, irrigation, crop yield and fertilization. It is also important for forestry including various issues such as parasites spread, long term CO2 storage or natural spaces near or inside large towns. The use of active and passive remote sensing from space allows us to have a better understanding of what is going on. The increase in satellite’s spatial and temporal resolutions offers an incredible tool which can be of great interest to study parameters at a national or continental scale.

The aim of this study is to find indicators of drastic change of agriculture land cover over the globe in the first step and for particular countries in a second step.



We propose a study to link key parameters of agriculture land cover modifications from human activity and meteorological events. Even if it is difficult to quantify the quantity of earth change in land use, different database were developed like the one from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). We defined significant proxies and parameters to identify drastic changes as a marker of social changes for different countries during these 10 past years. The proxies used are trend, ramp rate, ramp amplitude of area, production, yield and importation/exportation. We can define a number of drastic events in agricultural cover for each country. The study is concentrated around the grass feet for a part and the crop land in the other part with the 6 majors crop: Soybean, Wheat, Maize, Rice, Millet, Sunflower.



To study high variability at the country’s scale, we combined the use of Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). In complement to satellites dataset, ground base dataset such as meteorological stations helps us to better understand key parameters which can be related to actual land cover. Several approaches as high urbanization area, stability versus conflicts, deforestation and meteorological hazards are explored to provide a wide field of vision of actual and future agricultural practice.
