*Norihito Kawamura1 (1.School of Regional Resource Management, Graduate School, University of Hyogo)

Keywords:religion, grotto, pyroclastic rocks

In this study, geomorphological and geological field research is conducted for discovering the relations between natural environments and pilgrimage sites that are located in the mountainous region of the Kunisaki Peninsula, Oita Prefecture, southwest Japan. The research exhibits that pilgrimage sites that are located at the cliffs appear as volcanic breccia at the Pleistocene formation.
