[MZZ56-04] A Progress Approach to "Glocalization" of Social Earth Science in 1970s
Keywords:Earth science, Prof. Shimazu Yasuo, Glocal
In recent years, the establishment of school in regional studies has been spreading, mainly at regional national universities. The core disciplines are sociology, administration, architecture and urban planning, but the presence of earth science is not large. However, earth science is inherently closely related to social and regional issues such as resource development, disaster prevention, and the environment. In the field since the 1970s, there has been a tendency to deny individualized approaches and to emphasize global perspectives, and the reaction has overestimated local issues.
Thinking globally and focusing on solving local problems at hand, the slogan Think global, act local is widely known, but practiced in earth science in the 1970s. There are few examples. The term has become a catchphrase of Glocal since the 1980s and has become widely used as a business model for global expansion, but has not received much attention in the earth sciences world. Here, we discuss the significance of extremely advanced Glocal research based on the oral history of the late Professor Yasuo Shimadzu who made advanced efforts at the Nagoya University Earth Science Department.
