Keywords:typhoon, database, data collection

There were a number of strong typhoons that caused wind and rain disaster in Japan before the middle 20th century. For example, a typhoon attacked southern Kyushu on 15 August 1899, destroying sixteen thousand houses in Kagoshima Prefecture. On 28 September 1902, another typhoon attacked the Kanto area, destroying twenty thousand houses in Ibaraki Prefecture. It is to be desired to compile data on typhoons before the middle 20th century so that they are utilized as lessons for future disaster.
