[O05-P14] Connecting Local governments with Geopark activities
As of January 2020, there are 44 Japanese National Geoparks and 9 UNESCO Global Geoparks in Japan. In many Geoparks, the local governments play an important role in terms of budget and operation.
The San’in Kaigan UGGp consists of 6 municipalities from 3 prefectures. It declared a Japanese Geopark in 2008 and a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2010.
In the operation of the San’in Kaigan, main financial resources are contributed from local governments and most of Council staffs is assigned from local governments. It looks as if the local governments are taking the initiative in Geopark activities.
From the beginning, we faced various issues in coordination and stakeholder engagement arising from multi-municipality promotion and are currently working on solving them. Consequently we have taken various measures to solve these issues. In this presentation, we discuss about the difficulty of administer Geopark activities with multiple local governments.
