Japan has many natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic disasters, but weather disasters are the most common.
In recent years, large-scale weather disasters have been on the decline, but in 2018 and 2019, large-scale disasters occurred one after another. These disasters are not unique to others, but can also occur in geopark areas.
The Disaster Prevention WG of the Japan Geopark Network (hereinafter referred to as JGN) believes that these disasters should be reported in all geopark areas, and has held discussions with the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience and concluded an agreement on a comprehensive partnership in 2018. As a concrete measure, a system called "Earthquake!" which informs the occurrence of an earthquake in real time, is being constructed and a new exhibition is being tried in the geopark.
In order to cope with last year's devastating typhoon damage, the two companies decided to work together to create an exhibition panel on the typhoon disaster. We would like to exhibit these panels in the Geopark area to help raise disaster literacy by taking typhoon disasters as our own.
JGN has been proposing to put more effort into disaster prevention in the UNESCO Geopark, and in the future, we would like to strengthen activities to communicate various disasters in geopark regions throughout Japan.
