This presentation will highlight the importance of international cooperation for capacity building to address disaster risk reduction, as well as establishing the United Nations Global Geodetic Reference Frame. Multilateral and international forums supporting geodesy and Earth observations will be introduced. We will focus on recent achievements by the International GNSS Service and the IAG Global Geodetic Observing System in advocating, coordinating, and building capacity in international forums. We also discuss recent outcomes of the 2017 GNSS Tsunami Early Warning System Workshop (GTEWS 2017) held in Sendai, Japan in July 2017, during which academics assessed what resources would be required to develop real-time GNSS throughout the Pacific Rim.

Emphasis will be placed on the applicability of United Nations frameworks, including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, Sustainable Development Goals, and the UN GGIM-World Bank Integrated Geospatial Information Framework, as tools for communicating the relevance and importance of geodesy to a broader audience as well as potential funding sources.
