[SSS04-P05] Damage Hazard Caused by the Great Earthquake Ground Motion
Keywords:strong ground motion, Wenchuan earthquake, damage ratio, vulnerability
Given the fact that the degree of structural damage caused by earthquakes depends both on the characteristics of strong ground motions and the anti-seismic performance of structures, we collected and processed the sufficient observation-based data of the Wenchuan earthquake, from which the corresponding ground motion parameters to the 10 targeted districts were derived by the methods of interpolation and attenuation curves. We then established the vulnerability curves between the damage ratios (DRs) and the peak accelerations, peak velocity, peak spectrum acceleration as well as spectrum intensity. In addtion, an effective method for estimating the structural damage levels by using the fragility curve between DR and PGA /aF was proposed to eliminate the deviation in the design forces for these structures, which can provide important benefits for the structural damage studies. We showed that the reasonable seismic fortification plays a decisive role in improving buildings’ anti-seismic performance, that based on the improved “Code for Seismic Design of Buildings”, the predicted DRs for the 10 targeted districts can be reduced significantly compared with the actual damage they were suffered.
