Since the occurrence of the 1995 Kobe earthquake, the Seismological Society of Japan (SSJ) has made significant efforts on education and outreach (EO) by setting several committees effective. Development of each committee, which has been supported by the participation of teachers and journalists, has made a wide range of contributions on EO. After the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the SSJ decided to act in a more comprehensive way in order to promote the EO activities by starting a special committee in 2013 to exchange information of all EO activities in the associated committees and construct comprehensive plans as SSJ. This presentation shows the ongoing EO activities by the SSJ, which are listed below.

- Short courses for the renewal of teaching licenses (every year)
- Annual summer school for teachers
- Annual summer school for kids
- Short class of earthquakes for kids and teachers before/after the SSJ fall meeting
- Activities to support Geoparks (for example, tours in geoparks)
- Training courses concerning the prediction of strong ground motions
- Essays associated with strong ground motions
- Open seminars associated with strong ground motions
- Seminars in earthquake affected areas
- Quarterly magazines ‘Naifuru’ of earthquake topics for the public
- FAQs on earthquakes for the public on the SSJ website
- Mailing list linking between researchers and public
- Press conferences during the SSJ fall meeting and JpGU meeting every year
