NASA and JAXA have enjoyed a long standing partnership in earth observations from space. In this talk we will present science highlights from current and past key US-Japan joint endeavors such as AMSER-E/AMSR-2 on EOS platforms, carbon science missions (OCO-2/OCO-3/GOSAT/GOSAT-2), and the precipitation missions (TRMM, GPM). Going forward, the 2017 Decadal Survey (DS) highlighted Earth System Science themes, science and application questions, and several high priority objectives that have led to the inclusion of Aerosols (A) and Clouds-Convection-Precipitation (CCP) as Designated Observables (DOs). On July 17, 2018, several NASA centers (GSFC, LaRC, JPL, MSFC, GRC and ARC) submitted a joint Study Plan to the NASA Earth Science Division for the Aerosol (A) and Cloud, Convection, and Precipitation (CCP) Pre-formulation Study (A-CCP). In addition to NASA centers, ACCP includes strong international partnership with JAXA playing an important role on active remote sensing from space. We will conclude the presentation with a brief overview of the ACCP and the opportunities it offers for continued US-Japan collaboration.
