Extreme weather and climate events have significant societal impacts. The livelihoods and further economic development of highly vulnerable countries in Southeast Asia are often affected by torrential rains and strong winds brought by tropical cyclones, floods, droughts, heat waves, and monsoon surges, among other extremes. The impacts of these extreme events in the region are further exacerbated as the global temperature continues to rise. It is therefore important to enhance our understanding of these extreme weather and climate events through observational analyses and modeling. Predicting their occurrence hours, days, weeks, months, or years in advance, would likewise minimize their damaging impacts.
We invite studies related to extreme weather and climate focused on the Southeast Asia region. Studies might include observational analyses of extreme events, numerical modeling, and prediction at various timescales. Contributions related to the enhancement of observation network, improvements in the forecasting methods, introduction of new techniques, derivation of new datasets for better meteorological services in the region and weather and climate studies in Southeast Asia are also welcome. This session is a collaboration between members of the Philippine Meteorological Society and the JpGU.
