[A-OS21] Global ocean observation networks: Current status, results, re-assessments, and future perspectives

Tue. May 24, 2022 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM 104 (International Conference Hall, Makuhari Messe)

convener:Shigeki Hosoda(JAMSTEC), convener:Shuhei Masuda(Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology), Yosuke Fujii(Meteorological Research Institute, Japan Meteorological Agency), convener:Fujiki Tetsuichi(Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology), Chairperson:Yosuke Fujii(Meteorological Research Institute, Japan Meteorological Agency), Shigeki Hosoda(JAMSTEC)

The ocean observing network covered in the world, being complemented by Argo, GO-SHIP, OceanSITES, earth observation satellites, etc., and is indispensable for monitoring and predicting climate changes and ocean environment. In the past series of sessions, we have shared with many researchers and engineers the current status and future vision of global ocean observations, mainly focusing on the perspective from researchers in charge. In this session, we aim to re-assess the ongoing observing projects to depict their advantages and problems to clarify whether the existing large observation networks, like OneArgo etc., enable us to provide what we hope and what we want to achieve in our research motivation. We will have a forum to discuss "what is fulfilled", and "what is lacking" together with analytical, observational, modeling, and other-field researchers, sharing the research results and ideas. In addition, as the United Nations of Ocean Decade has started and the need for global ocean observation has been reaffirmed, we would like to have a wide-ranging discussion, including young researchers and graduate students, on whether the ocean observation network as it has been in the past will be able to withstand or necessary to develop toward future demands.
