The impacts of climate change include increased risk of natural disasters such as typhoons and torrential rains, changes in the distribution of organisms, and deterioration of quality and yield in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries due to high temperature damage. It is an urgent issue to develop adaptation measures to deal with these problems and implement them in society. Japan enacted the Climate Change Adaptation Act in 2018, aiming to minimize or avoid damage caused by the effects of climate change and build a sustainable society, and climate change adaptation plans have been formulated, accelerating the development of adaptation plans not only by the national government but also by local governments. In addition, as a recent international trend, a bottom-up approach has been started to provide scientific support that is more needed by local stakeholders.
In this session, toward planning adaptation to climate change and enhancing its social implementation based on scientific knowledge, we will discuss about generation of climate change projection data, assessment of the impacts and risks of climate change in various fields, as well as social implementation of adaptation plans by co-creation with stakeholders and/or by local climate change adaptation acts.
