[M-IS23] Dynamics of eruption cloud and cumulonimbus; modelling and observation

Thu. May 26, 2022 5:15 PM - 6:45 PM Exhibition Hall 8

Volcanic plumes and cumulonimbus clouds are similar phenomena. For both phenomena, modeling that accurately reproduces their physical processes and observation with high temporal and spatial resolution are essential for accurate prediction. In terms of observation, the development of remote sensing technologies such as meteorological radar and meteorological satellites has made it possible to monitor the phenomena in detail. As for modeling, theoretical models have been discussed in volcanology, while in meteorology, advanced prediction methods using data assimilation and ensembles have been developed in recent years. In future, it is expected that a lot of interdisciplinary studies on modeling will be conducted in terms of both theory and prediction methods.
In this session, we will discuss the dynamics and physical processes of volcanic plumes and cumulonimbus clouds, and their accompanying phenomena, e.g., ash fall, rainfall, snowfall, hailfall, volcanic block ejection, etc. Through discussions among experts from different fields such as volcanology, meteorology, and geology, we aim to improve our understanding and prediction methods.
