Academic knowledge from various perspectives on disaster prevention has been accumulated. However, it seems to be doubtful whether the children responsible for the future, general people, and public officers have recognized this knowledge. How much academic knowledge is taken into consideration when an individual takes evacuation action when building a house, when a local government or country thinks about urban development, or when making an evacuation advisory? Understanding the mechanisms by which natural disasters occur will help us to infer disaster conditions and consider effective evacuation methods. Gender issues in disaster prevention and the emergence of vulnerable people such as the elderly and disabled who are left behind from evacuation and reconstruction are also useful for building local communities and disaster prevention education at schools. The development of disaster-resistant communities is directly linked to city planning that does not place a burden on the global environment. It is important not only to make the structures earthquake-resistant but also to select an area with strong ground when planning. In this session, we will discuss various issues of disaster prevention education and outreach in a broad sense that should be considered from tomorrow to 10 years or to several decades. We would like to invite experts from a wide range of fields as speakers from the Japan Academic Network for Disaster Reduction and JpGU to deliver academic knowledge on disaster prevention and mitigation to as many people as possible.
