Keywords:kilometer-scale modeling, mesoscale processes, high performance computing

Kilometer-scale models can have significant benefits for simulating regional and local weather and climate phenomenon compared to coarser-resolution models. This presentation will review two decades of kilometer-scale modeling activities at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). I will highlight landmark simulations and results and emphasize the role of increasing high-performance computer (HPC) resources in enabling modeling advances. Specifically, I will focus on recent developments in regional and global kilometer-scale climate simulations and the advent of kilometer-scale earth system models.
