The World Climate Research Programme’s Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (now Exchanges; GEWEX) formulated the GEWEX Continental-Scale International Project (GCIP) in 1990 to develop for the first time, a research framework to understand land-atmosphere interactions on climate time scales. GCIP’s tightly coordinated multi-agency observational and modeling activities advanced hydrological prediction within the Mississippi River Basin. Its success motivated a wave of subsequent Continental Scale Experiments (CSEs) across the world’s large river basins.

Nowadays GEWEX CSEs are called Regional Hydroclimate Projects (RHPs) and their scope have expanded dramatically. Over the past 30 years the paradigm has shifted from leveraging of observations and the latest operational weather prediction systems to artificial intelligence, hyper resolution modeling, and a much closer integration between hydrology, weather and climate research and applications.

Several of these projects be it CSEs or RHPs have focused on Monsoon systems and in this presentation an overview is given of their results and impact.
