JAXA polar-orbit satellite, GCOM-C called “SHIKISAI” has been launched on 23 Dec. 2017, and continued global observation by Second-generation GLobal Imager (SGLI), which has 250-m spatial resolution with 1150-1400 km swath and nineteen channels in 0.38-12 um including two polarimetry channels.
In the fourth year of the GCOM-C operation, the following remarkable environmental phenomena were observed:
(1) Relatively heavy Kosa aerosols were captured by SGLI near ultra violet (NUV) to visible channels around Japan several times in March-May 2021; (2) plume from eruption of La Soufrière volcano in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on 11 April 2021 was analyzed by SGLI multiangle observations; (3) Siberia wildfires from the end of June to the early July 2021 was characterized by fine-mode aerosols emitting from burning areas by SGLI polarimetry and 250-m resolution images; (4) long distance transport of pumice rafts from volcanic eruption of submarine volcano, Fukutoku-Oka-no-Ba, were chased by SGLI 250m visible and shortwave-infrared channels after 14 Aug. 2021; (5) large scale harmful algal bloom in the southeast coast of Hokkaido from September to November 2021 and its spectral characteristics were monitored continuously by the SGLI multi-spectral channels; (6) high altitude aerosols from eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano were identified by SGLI multiangle observations and the short-wave infrared channel at 1.38 um.
GCOM-C data have been accumulated for more than four years now, and the version-3 products processing has been started in the end of November 2021. The observation products are expected to be used in both research and monitoring of the environmental change and predicting the earth system change in the future.
