[ACG38-13] Latest Status and Future Plan of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) Series

JAXA has developed a series of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR), which is a multi-frequency, total-power microwave radiometer system with dual polarization channels for all frequency bands from 6.9 to 89 GHz. The latest one is AMSR2 onboard the Global Change Observation Mission-Water (GCOM-W or “SHIZUKU”) satellite, which was launched in May 2012. AMSR2 has achieved designed mission life of 5 years in 2017 and is operating on orbit in healthy condition more than 9 years. We plan to release precipitation Ver.3 and SST Ver.4.1 standard products in early 2022. In addition, high-resolution sea ice concentration (5-km spatial resolution) and sea ice motion vector research products are released in JFY2022 and some other research products for land area are prepared for public release.
JAXA is currently developing a follow-on mission of AMSR2, named AMSR3, to be carried by the Global Observing SATellite for Greenhouse gases and Water cycle (GOSAT-GW). It is expected to be launched in the JFY 2023. Major targets of the AMSR3 mission are producing long-term continuous data record of AMSR series and enhancing operational utilizations of near-real time data (e.g., weather forecast including typhoon and hurricane analysis, fishery near the coasts, navigational assistance on arctic shipping route). To achieve these targets, sensor characteristics of AMSR3 is almost similar to that of AMSR2 except additional channels in high-frequency (166.5, 183+-7, 183+-3 GHz) for snowfall and water vapor analysis and 10.25 GHz with improved NEDT for robust SST retrievals in higher spatial resolution. AMSR3 product will be NetCDF4 format, which is compatible to HDF5 format, and released to the public about one year after the launch but may be released earlier to the PIs and partner agencies during calibration and validation phase.
JAXA recently has opened new AMSR series web site (https://www.eorc.jaxa.jp/AMSR/) integrating web sites of each AMSR sensor and the site will be updated with information of future AMSR3.
