[AGE31-P05] Permeable Pavement System: A Review of Design, Performance and Knowledge Gaps

Permeable Pavement System (PPS) is a unique class of pavement that functions as both structural vehicular and pedestrian surface, but also as a stormwater management. The common PPS includes mainly Pervious Asphalt Pavement, Pervious Concrete Pavement, and Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement. During the past two decades, a tremendous amount of study has been made with regard to the application of PPS regarding design, construction, performance, and maintenance. The PPS has been performed well in roadway, sidewalk, and parking lot applications. However, there are still many important questions that must be answered before PPS can be fully applied in urban roads (i.e., highways with high speed and loads). This study summarizes the major research on 1) design and performance, especially in hydrologic performance and water quality, 2) and identifies the research knowledge gaps. This review work searched database includes American Society of Civil Engineers library, American Concrete Institute, publications by National Asphalt Pavement Association and Federal Highway Administration, standard specifications of States Departments of Transportation in America, Google Scholar, and Web of ScienceTM. Review of the literature revealed that the current PPS design relies on existing procedures for conventional pavement. Also, the PPS is beneficial to stormwater run-off management and groundwater quality improvement. In order to have a better understanding of the maintenance performance (i.e., clogging and maintenance requirement) and improve the design standards, a monitoring work throughout the pavement life is needed.
