[AOS21-05] Current Status, Achievements and Future of the Global Ocean Observing System: Adaptation and Development to Needs (Discussion)

*Shuhei Masuda1 (1.Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology)

Keywords:Global Ocean Observation, UN Decade of Ocean

Global ocean observing systems, such as Argo, GO-SHIP, OceanSITES, and Earth observation satellites, cover the entire ocean and are indispensable for monitoring and predicting future changes in the climate and ocean state. In a series of sessions so far, we have shared with many researchers and engineers the current status and future vision of ocean observation systems from the viewpoint of researchers in the field. Here, we will discuss the benefits and challenges of huge international projects in marine science from the perspective of what we hope to achieve through the promotion of such projects, following the oral presentation regarding to OneArgo, one of the largest international observation projects. We will exchange views on "what is fulfilled" and "what is lacking" with researchers working on various observation and model systems, and discuss whether they should be continued in their current form and how they should be developed. We would like to deepen the outline of the observation network that should be established in the future.
