[E-11-05] Attributing decadal modulations of global warming

Yu Kosaka1 (1. Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo)

Global warming from the late 1990s to the early 2010s was slower than in the preceding few decades. This so-called “hiatus” highlights the staircase-like global warming with decadal acceleration and deceleration in the historical records. Internal variability has likely contributed to it in addition to non-greenhouse gas drivers such as aerosols. However, quantification of each contribution has been challenging. This lecture will review attribution studies of global warming modulations with their implications for climate change research.
