[E-11-16] Legacy Seismic Data: Challenges and Potentials
Seismometers were invented more than 100 years ago, and have been recording various phenomena, both natural (e.g., earthquakes) and artificial (e.g., nuclear tests). A vast amount of analogue records are still available today, and if they can be digitized, they will contribute unprecedented information for our understanding of rare earthquakes and climate change. Digitization is challenging, but it is something we must address before these records are lost due to deterioration and poor oversight. This presentation touches upon information that can only be extracted from legacy data, and our efforts for digitization including those involving Japanese high school students.
