This study finds subjects and discusses effective disaster reduction education practices under the new high school curriculum in Japan. For this purpose, the author conducted questionnaire surveys for science and geography teachers of higher secondary school regarding the objectives of disaster education in each subject. Teachers of both subjects hope that students will study hazards in science class and become aware about the primary causes of disasters related to geomorphology in geography class. Evacuation drills are conducted in other classes, such as the comprehensive studies period for integrated study. Teachers seek out newspaper articles, photos, movies of natural disasters and hazard maps as teaching materials in their classes. We should publish scientific articles about disasters and study utilising hazard maps in schools to promote the development of such teaching materials.
