Keywords:High school, Typhoon, The tale of Genji, Nowaki, Cross-curricular
This study proposes an approach to cross-curricular teaching of the typhoon in high school.
The Tale of Genji is a famous classical story in Japan, which deals with peculiar meteorological phenomena in seasons around the year. The chapter of ‘Nowaki’ especially includes a detailed description of typhoons. Our target is to lead the students to comprehensive understandings about the relationship between water and meteorology. Through appreciating this classical masterpiece, students should have the opportunity to consider the size and path of the typhoon based on the wind direction, wind speed, and rainfall shown in the chapter of ‘Nowaki.’ Eventually, they should come to understand that typhoons have a great impact on the natural environment and human life in both ancient and modern times.
