The cedar avenue of Mt. Haguro, which is over 300 years old, is a symbolic space with a long history as a setting for Shugendo (mountaineering asceticism). It is also designated as a national special natural monument, and is a tourist resource visited by many people. However, the cedar avenue with old trees has been damaged by typhoons in recent years, and the number of old trees as special natural monument were decreasing. It is time to develop a future management plan considering various values of the ceder avenue. This study aimed to evaluate landscape preference of local people and clarify the desirable future vision of the ceder avenue.
We conducted a questionnaire survey in november 2021 at Touge area. Two copies of the questionnaire were distributed to all 360 households and 190 valid samples were obtained. The questionnaire form consists of questions regarding the purpose of use of cedar avenue, impressions of the current situation, desirable future vision and future management policies. In addition to that, impression evaluation was conducted by the SD method by showing photographs of the current situation and simulation images of future predictions.
As for the result of the current landscape evaluation of the cedar avenue, "the majesty and godliness of the giant cedar tree" was the most answered. While the majority of respondents were not related to religion, the answer that "I feel the accumulation of history as a space for Shugendo" was second moust answered. On the other hand, about half of the respondents answered that they can refresh themselves by coming into contact with nature, which is linked to their daily recreational use. Some respondents had an "impression of devastation", but "danger of passage due to fallen branches and fallen trees" nor "overgrowth of undergrowth and shrubs" were not recognized. Furthermore, the results of the SD method also appeared much in common with the question results using the choices in the text.
Two types of simulation images using photomontage are prepared to explain likely future changes in cedar avenue, which are “succession to beech forests scenario” and “regeneration of the ceder avenue scenario”. As a result, 65% of the respondents chose the future image of “regeneration of the ceder avenue scenerio”. The results of the SD method almost overlaped with the results of the impression fabout "current situation". However, the current cedar avenue, which is a mixture of broad-leaved trees, gives the impression of being "refreshing," "friendly," and "various," more than the simulation image of the reproduction of a pure cedar avenue.
