Keywords:applied geomorphology, natural disaster, nature conservation

I reviewed the development of applied geomorphology in postwar Japan. Geomorphological studies have provided a great deal of information for recovery from and countermeasures against natural disasters. On the other hand, the results of geomorphological research were sometimes used for the conservation of the natural environment. These studies were often discussed in the field of geography after the Meiji era. With the establishment of the Japan Geomorphological Union, this society began to provide a forum for discussion.
