[MIS04-06] An attempt to identify minerals by a simple in situ field survey of secondary products of weathering

Determination of mineral composition is usually performed by combination of several analysis such as XRD, XRF, SEM-EDS, EPMA, FTIR, polarization microscopes, etc. However, it is important to know as soon as possible, because salts as secondary minerals due to weathering are changeable by environmental conditions. The present study conducted a simple field survey to narrow down the type of minerals in situ and as quickly as possible. The objected areas are the pedestrian concrete deck of Saitama University and at the site of an underground munitions factory in the Yoshimi Hyakuana Historic Site. Both areas have white precipitation on the wall of ceiling or rock walls. If a sample contained only one type of salt, it was possible to make a guess using several kinds of pack tests. However, it was impossible to determine sodium, which often appears as a salt, or to estimate the mineral composition of a sample containing multiple salts. In order to solve these limitation, it is necessary to examine from various perspectives such as measuring the water activity value and salinity value, in addition to environmental description.
