Various kinds of surface protective materials have been widely used for stone buildings in order not to damage due to weathering. However, "silane-based repellents" are recently developed and has not been investigated intensively so far. The present study examines the effectiveness of the repellents on 5 tuff rocks by total immersion method of wetting-drying experiment. The specimens with a size of 50×50×150 mm were put into the distilled water up to a height of 30 cm from the bottom at 20 ° C for 12 h, and then, 40 ℃ for 12 h. Weight change of the specimen and the elastic wave velocity were measured, and the photograph was taken every three cycles. The results show that 1) preventing water absorption from tuff specimens, 2) suppression of degradation by filling pores in tuff, 3) Increase the strength of repellent infiltrated part. However, there is a limitation that not all of tuff get such effects.
