[MIS11-P02] Development of “Stone Fishing Game” utilizing magnetism of gabbro –an example of educational game in Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark

This presentation suggests effective way to observe rock magnetism for enhancing interests of children and students in geology in Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark.
Murotomisaki Gabbro, formed in 14Ma, is strongly magnetic, because it abundantly contains ferruginous and magnetic minerals (e.g. magnetite and ilmenite)[1, 2]. The land of Cape Muroto is mainly composed of sedimentary rocks which is not magnetic very much. During an educational program at Cape Muroto, we asks children and students to use a magnet to find a particular rock which is actually gabbro. It will make them, observe rocks very closely with strong curiosity.
Furthermore, we developed an educational program for children, "Stone Fishing Game", that further enhances the game element. At the park where gabbro is used for gravel, children try this game. Children use magnet with fishing line to "fish" stone from the gravels. Children collect the stones in a paper cup and they compete for the total weight of the collected stones. Rock magnetism is deeply related to rock types and its formation processes. Children can learn differences of rocks with and without magnetism through their experiences.
Children learn on magnet in elementary school. Students in junior high school learn that iron is contained in their body and that they need to eat iron-containing food. The aim of the Stone Fishing Game is to make them understand that iron abundantly exists in the solid earth, and that iron derived from rock is taken into our body through the ecosystem. Stone Fishing Game will contribute enhancing of their interest and understanding in nature.
