Keywords:Tanzawa Mountains, headwater, chemical characteristics of stream water

In this study we investigated in forested headwater in Tanzawa Mountains. The purpose of this study was to clarify about chemical characteristics of headwater. Stream water were collected in conterminous catchment areas. The pH, electric conductivity, and major ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl, NO3, SO42−, HCO3) concentration were analyzed. Electric conductivity and major ions concentration of the sample immediately after precipitation were low than others. Chemical characteristics of headwater were changed by precipitation. The water quality of streams in the study area was Ca-HCO3 type. Each stream differed clearly in electric conductivity and some ions concentration. The difference of chemical characteristics of stream water was associated with the catchment area characteristics.
