Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have been found all over the earth. This means that we will be exposed to these tiny particles anywhere on the world.
There’s a evidence that plastics has been found in a living beings which include human bodies. However only few studies have conducted to develop the method to detect MPs and NPs from our bodies from the atmosphere. Here, we are studying whether these tiny particles in the atmosphere are deposited in the human lungs by respiration, using human lung tissue and Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid (BALF). Our results showed that MPs and NPs were detected in all lung tissues and BALFs (n=10). Here, Nile red dye, fluorescence microscopy, and image analysis software were used to detect the shape and size of MPs and NPs, and micro-Raman spectroscopy was used to identify the composition of these polymers (such as polyethylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate, etc.).
