[O05-04] Importance of using local materials as teaching materials in the 5th grade of elementary school "Work of flowing water and changes in land"

In the new course of study, the handling of "touching about natural disasters" was added to the guidance of "the work of flowing water and changes in land" in the 5th grade of elementary school. We believe that learning by linking the three actions of running water (erosion, transportation, and sedimentation) learned in this unit with natural disasters is a very important teaching content in communicating the usefulness of science to children. However, if the lessons are centered around flood damage cases in areas that have nothing to do with children, such as those listed in textbooks, children in the fifth grade of elementary school will inevitably be regarded as other personnel and will be the main actors. Realization of learning is difficult. Therefore, in this practice, the flood damage that occurred in the past in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, where the children live, was used as a teaching material so that natural disasters could be regarded as their own.
The practice was conducted for 28 children in the 5th grade of elementary school. Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, has a history of being damaged by numerous floods from the past to the present. As a result of the pre-questionnaire, 85% of the children answered "I don't think it's true or not" to the question "Do you think Hokuto City is a flood-prone area?" In order to raise children's awareness of disaster prevention, in the latter half of the unit, the teaching material is "Flood damage in Mukawa village due to typhoon No. 7 in 1959", which is said to have caused the greatest damage among the flood damages recorded in Hokuto city. It became. First, from the aerial photograph of Mukawa Village before the disaster (1947), the flow path and width of the river at that time were grasped, and the dangerous points were examined. Then, based on the learned items, we asked them to consider what measures can be taken to reduce the damage caused by the flooding of the river. After that, he presented the flood damage countermeasures currently installed in the rivers of Mukawa Village and confirmed that the flood damage countermeasures considered by the children were actually being implemented. In addition, we invited people who experienced flood damage at that time as guest teachers and talked about their experiences to deepen their learning.
