The purpose of the middle item "Field survey method" is to acquire the method of field survey. Teachers need to organize their learning units based on their school district. The textbook shows a case study. Our school district is adjacent to the Tone River and has been damaged by floods in the past. Therefore, we conducted a field survey on the theme of evacuation from flood damage. This was combined with the aim of disaster prevention education to acquire knowledge about natural disasters in the region and to consider the dangers that occur during evacuation. We used chronological tables, city public relations articles, topographic maps, aerial photographs, and hazard maps as materials. We conducted fieldwork around the school and considered the dangers of evacuation. We investigated the route from home to the evacuation site by home study and summarized the results on a map. From the results of the questionnaire after learning, it was confirmed that the awareness of disaster prevention increased.
The middle item "Regional characteristics and regional divisions of Japan" aims to understand the characteristics of Japan's natural environment based on natural disasters and disaster prevention. The textbook provides an overview of various natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and typhoons. In the class, based on the description in the textbook, the work was done to summarize the relations of various natural disasters in a diagram. And, we thought about disaster prevention measures. The textbook also covers support for the affected areas. In the class, we considered the cooperation between self-help, mutual assistance, and public assistance based on the case of textbooks. In the study of the middle item "Regions of Japan", as one of the methods for considering regional characteristics, "a method for considering the natural environment as the core" is shown. For example, in a learning unit in the Kyushu, we covered the activities of people living with volcanoes. Based on the description in the textbook, we have summarized the volcanoes, problems in daily life, disaster prevention efforts, etc. in a diagram. Students deepened their understanding that disaster prevention against natural disasters has become a local issue. Regarding earthquakes and volcanoes, we paid attention to the relationship with science learning.
The new course of study does not exemplify the subject of the middle item " The ideal way of the region". In the textbook, disaster prevention is exemplified as one of the subjects. In the class, we focused on the area where the students lived and focused on flood control and aging society.
