[O06-01] Issues in Research Public Relations and Earth and Planetary Science Public Relations
★Invited Papers
Keywords:public relations, earth and planetary science, communication
In order for academic organizations, whether research institutes or universities, to expand their research activities, it is important to promote the work of research public relations, i.e., communication to build a relationship of trust between the research organization and its stakeholders, which is the basis for obtaining research funds, research personnel, and places to conduct research.
The strategies and tactics for promoting public relations work vary depending on the academic field that each research organization undertakes. In the case of public relations for basic science, there is the "romance" of expanding the horizons of knowledge, but on the other hand, it is difficult to gain the attention of all people because it is disconnected from daily life. On the other hand, public relations in the field of research that deals with global environmental issues that look at reality can easily attract people's attention, but there are issues such as how to publicize a wide range of research topics and how to appeal to people to recognize global issues as their own.
The speaker of this lecture founded and served as the first chairman of the Japan Association for Communication in Science and Technology (JACST), a network of public relations officers from research institutes and universities across Japan. I'm now serving as a communicator at Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) after building her career at several research institutes such like the Research Organizatino for Informasion and Systems, to which National Institute for Polar Research belong. RIHN recognizes that global environmental issues are a common challenge for all humankind, and conducts research based on the foundations of various academic disciplines. In addition to interdisciplinary research that combines the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences, the institute promotes a "comprehensive global environmental studies" that includes a transdisciplinary approach that aims to solve problems in cooperation with society. In this talk, I will introduce the role of research public relations and public relations officers who connect research organizations with those stakeholders, and discuss common issues in research public relations, as well as issues in public relations for earth and planetary science, which deals with a wide range of research fields including integrated global environmental studies.
