In Japan, disasters such as great earthquakes often happen. When this occurs, furniture often falls down and can cause significant damage. For the purpose of disaster prevention, this research aims to evaluate the use of aseismic mats in preventing earthquake damage.
A wooden object was placed on five types of aseismic mats, and shaken on a rotary shaker. Based on the number of shaker’s rpm, the shaking intensity at which the object fell down was then recorded.
As a result, a correlation between thinner mats and seismic resistance was observed. Interestingly the mat which consisted of elastomer wasn’t effective at all like the object with it fell down at 130rpm; the others endured unto about 180rpm.
This study concluded that a thicker mat’s raising the position of the object’s center of gravity caused it to topple more readily. Thus, we should choose thin one for disaster prevention.
