[O08-P60] Development of aromatics: Using Chamaecyparis obtusa thinned wood and Prunus x yedoensis

*Ema Fujimori1, *Momoka Tsuji1 (1.Kyoto Prefectural Sagano High School)

Keywords:Thinned wood, Sapwood and heartwood, Odor intensity

In this study, the purpose was to develop an aromatic agent using thinned wood from Chamaecyparis obtusa, of which a large amount is generated in Japan, as well as from Prunus x yedoensis in order to improve our school’s overall environment. At present, our school forest research lab is conducting research to utilize thinned wood, so this was why Chamaecyparis obtusa was chosen. Wood from the upper trunk and the lower trunk of the tree was cut from the cypress. Then an aromatic liquid was extracted from the sapwood as well as the heartwood from each part using a steam distillation method. Next, we also examined the inflorescence of Prunus x yedoensis trees at the school and extracted an aromatic liquid from their buds before blooming. The odor intensity of both the cypress and the cherry blossom buds will be compared by surveying about 100 students at school using a questionnaire.
