[U08-15] Muography Cooperative Research Infrastructure for Earth, Planetary, Other Sciences and Society
キーワード:muography、solid Earth、Ocean、Atmosphere、Culture、Industry
This project’s purpose is to overcome the current limitations of muography in order to facilitate technological advancements which can be applied to studies of the planet Earth, contributing to the realization of a resilient and zero carbon society. Due to the high penetration characteristics of cosmic-ray muons, researchers have continued to study muography for more than half century. Muography uses this particle, a ubiquitous natural resource available worldwide, as a probe to image the interiors of gigantic objects. Developing muography to the next stage is essential in order to successfully discover new phenomenon with near-future geo-exploration technology in the fields of atmospheric, hydrospheric and subterranean science and technologies. MUOGRAPHIX, the international muography research organization of the University of Tokyo will take the helm of this project. This research infrastructure proposed here will combine not only diversified academic and industrial talent, international cooperation and interdisciplinary viewpoints, but also various intersectoral bodies towards the same goal. These efforts will be immediately applied to practical solutions to better understand and protect social infrastructures and cultural heritage; by uncovering clues of past disasters and challenges faced during our ancient past and by discovering the cycles and characteristics of natural phenomenon with muography, a bridge will be created, bringing us closer to having more sustainable, safe, and interconnected communities.
