[A-CG36] Terrestrial monitoring using new-generation geostationary satellites

Wed. May 24, 2023 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM 104 (International Conference Hall, Makuhari Messe)

convener:Yuhei Yamamoto(Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, Chiba University), Tomoaki Miura(Univ Hawaii), Kazuhito Ichii(Chiba University), Chairperson:Yuhei Yamamoto(Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, Chiba University)

The third-generation geostationary satellites, such as Himawari-8/9, GOES-16/17/18, Fengyun-4, and GeoKompsat-2A, have been launched, and the earth observation is in a new phase. These sensors are equipped with new spectral bands suitable for terrestrial monitoring and used in polar-orbiting satellite sensors, enabling hyper-temporal (e.g. 10 min) observations of critical land parameters such as land surface temperature/albedo, vegetation indices, evapotranspiration, and photosynthetic activity. By combining these satellites and polar-orbiting satellites/sensors such as Terra/Aqua/MODIS, JPSS/VIIRS, and GCOM-C/SGLI, new-generation global monitoring data will be possible. This would allow for a consistent comparison of a variety of phenomena across continents. To this end, there are many issues to be discussed, such as the standardization of the processing of land surface parameters, calibration and verification using GEO-(LEO)-GEO satellites, and application of these new datasets to various phenomena. In this session, we will discuss the estimations of land surface parameters, inter-sensor calibration, validation efforts using in-situ data, and novel applications to various phenomena. Studies on atmospheric parameters in relation to land surface phenomena, such as cloud cover and aerosols, are also highly welcomed.
