Coastal seas are adjacent area to land with human lives, and anthropogenic stresses have recently altered their environments. Since oceanographic settings and processes are highly diverse in coastal areas, both basic and applied approaches are required. For example, coastal circulation would be controlled by various physical processes such as large-scale ocean circulation (e.g., Kuroshio current), turbulent mixing, eddies and non-linear internal waves. Shift toward degraded status of coastal ecosystems would be attributed to wide variety of regional environmental issues (e.g., eutrophication, red tide and hypoxia). In addition, the effeect of global-scale climate change on coastal processes have received a surge of recent attention. Here, we propose an interdisciplinary session on coastal circulation and material cycle.
