[M-IS06] Extreme Weather and Disasters in Southeast Asia

Mon. May 22, 2023 4:45 PM - 5:00 PM 301B (International Conference Hall, Makuhari Messe)

Flash Talk Content

Extreme weather events have significant societal impacts. The livelihoods and further economic development of highly vulnerable countries in Southeast Asia are often affected by torrential rains, strong winds and lightning brought by tropical cyclones, floods, droughts, heat waves, and monsoon surges, among other extremes. These extreme weather events often lead to disasters. It is therefore important to enhance our understanding of these extreme weather events through observational analyses, modeling, new techniques and new datasets of various methods. We invite studies related to extreme weather focused on the Southeast Asia region. Studies might include observational analyses of extreme events, numerical modeling, and prediction at various timescales. Contributions related to thunderstorms, lightning and their atmospheric effects, impact to disasters in Southeast Asia are also welcome. This session is a collaboration between members of the Philippine Meteorological Society (PMS), Indonesia Disaster Expert Association (IABI) and the JpGU.
