[A-CG35] Global Carbon Cycle Observation and Analysis

Thu. May 25, 2023 10:15 AM - 10:30 AM 104 (International Conference Hall, Makuhari Messe)

Flash Talk Content

The Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) aimed at reduction of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission to keep the global warming below 2 deg C. The national commitments and progresses should be carefully monitored and verified by international bodies using different but complementary methodologies. Multiple lines of evidences are being acquired from observation and modeling of GHGs (e.g. CO2, CH4, N2O). National to regional sources and sinks estimations are improved by emission inventories, and top-down (atmospheric inverse analysis) and bottom-up (process-based models, site observation upscaling) approaches. The purpose of the session is to discuss state-of-the-art techniques for estimations of GHGs budgets and uncertainties at global and regional scales. The topic includes understanding of natural and anthropogenic processes using multiple methodologies (e.g. in-situ observation, aircraft monitoring, remote sensing, modeling, integration) for different targets (e.g. atmosphere, land, and ocean) at various spatial and temporal coverage (e.g. regional to global scales and past-present-future). Improved estimates of emissions from land use change, forest fires, and other anthropogenic sources (urban developments and thermal power station etc.) are also of interest.
