The United Nations and UNESCO have designated the year starting July 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD), and the Science Council of Japan and Japan Geoscience Union are organizing various events to support this. Because the JpGU meeting 2023 is registered as an IYBSSD event, this Union session is organized as a main event. Because earth and planetary science is based on fundamental sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, representatives from each academic society are invited to talk about their actions toward IYBSSD. In addition, talks are solicited on contribution of earth and planetary sciences toward sustainable development.
