[ACG37-P18] An Analysis of Persian Gulf Coastline using Satellite Images

*I-Ying Hsu1, Kuo-Hsin Tseng1 (1.Center for Space and Remote Sensing Research, National Central University)

Keywords:coastline change, Persian Gulf, DEM

The Persian Gulf is a crucial region in the world's energy supply due to its abundant reserves of oil and natural gas. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the development of the oil export supply chain on the coastline and its topographical changes. To detect the mean high water line efficiently, we use high-resolution satellite images captured by Sentinel-2 and created Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) was derived from the green, red, visible, and near-infrared (VNIR) bands, with the inundation probability set to 0.75-0.85. This methodology enabled the monitoring of the coastline changes and land reclamation processes in the 8-year period from 2015 to 2022. The results of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the impact of human activities on coastal environments and inform coastal management and planning in the Persian Gulf region.
