Marine bacteria produce and metabolize low molecular weight (LMW) organic compounds. In contrast to the commonly known direct production of LMW organic compounds by marine bacteria, the indirect production process information remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the potential formation of LMW organic compounds from bacterial-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM). Through a series of laboratory experiments using natural marine bacteria to produce bacterially derived DOM and underwent light irradiation treatment, we observed a directly proportional relationship between the bacterial-derived DOM reduction and the LMW organic compound production. The outcome of this study may suggest bacterial-derived DOM as one of the important substrates for the formation of LMW organic compounds in the natural marine environment.
