Keywords:mining, soil properties, soil microbe, rehabilitation

After mining, the ecosystem typically needs a considerable period to recover. Changes in biotic and abiotic variables occur during succession. A thorough understanding of the current situation of the former mining fields is necessary to accelerate rehabilitation. Observation at specific times will reveal the current state of such land soil qualities. We measured soil physical, chemical, and biological properties in a variety of ages of after-mining lands on the small tropical island of Belitung, Indonesia. We specifically sampled soils from four areas: 0 year after mining, 1 year after mining, 6 years after mining, and adjacent natural forest as a reference site. Soil water content, hydraulic conductivity, bulk density, particle distribution, mineral contents, and soil microbial communities were already measured directly in the field and examined in the lab. These data indicated a temporal dynamic in soil properties between land ages. The outcome will be useful in developing more efficient restoration strategies.
