Plastic film mulching is an effective technique for modification of soil microclimates in rainfed agriculture by reducing evaporation, retaining soil moisture and altering soil temperature(Kader et al., 2017). In spite of a more need to elucidate the actual soil water dynamics including water vapor movement that more closely related to actual water and heat dynamics, there is few examples of quantitative analysis of liquid and vapor water in soil and heat transport in rain-fed plots under complex conditions of artificial structures such as ridges and mulch. Then, the main objective of this research is to quantitatively investigate soil water and thermal dynamics when mulch and ridges are present in the field, both observationally and analytically. A modified HYDRUS 2D was used to simulate unsaturated liquid and vapor water and heat transport within ridges under different cover conditions. In an experimental field of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology as large as 12 meters square (each 4 m long and 3 m wide), volumetric water content, soil water potential, temperature, and surface heat fluxes, in three ridges under different cover conditions, such as black plastic mulch and silver plastic mulch, were monitored for months.
