[AHW18-16] Impacts of Carbon Dioxide Removal technologies on land-ocean-matter flux and coastal waters
★Invited Papers
キーワード:CO2, carbon dioxide removal, alkalinity, nutrients, enhanced weathering, ocean alkalinity enhancement
Removing large volumes of CO2 from the atmosphere, as well as rapid and deep emission reductions, are required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. This has catalyzed recent attention on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches that can remove more CO2 from the atmosphere than they emit. Some of the proposed methods include Enhanced Weathering (the application of rock powder to land or the coastal zone), biochar (transformed biomass into biochar and applied to soils) or Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (addition of alkalinity to rivers or seawater to increase the capacity of water to bind CO2).
An overview of recent proposals, state of knowledge, considering costs and CDR potentials, will be provided. Research gaps in context of land-ocean matter transfer will be discussed.
