[AOS14-08] Ocean state forecasting toward the digital twin of the ocean
★Invited Papers
To understand the predictability of the ocean current variations around Japan, we have been conducting the Japan Coastal Ocean Predictability Experiment (JCOPE) using data-assimilative ocean general circulation models. Recent enhancement of the computational resources indicates two directions of ocean forecasting: ensemble and downscaling. The ensemble simulation is utilized for estimation of the uncertainty, improvements in data-assimilation, and indication of forecast sensitivity, utilizing coarser grid models. The downscaling is necessary for answering a critical open question: coastal and open seas interactions. We discuss the present status of our research and development activity along the two directions, focusing on their possible contributions to the digital twin of the ocean that have been attracting attention in recent years.
